Foreign Language Standards

1. Students listen to and derive meaning from a variety of foreign language sources. 

  • Teen Talk: Students will be able to understand a variety of foreign language learning materials.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will derive meaning through context, intonation, and situation from listening sources including face to face communication, speakers, films, and videos.
    • Students will obtain and process information by using multiple criteria.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will go to an elementary school and translate non-English-speaking students' speech and written work for the teacher.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Translator, foreign tour guide
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • Spanish, French, Latin, and German.

2. Students speak in the foreign language for a variety of purposes and for diverse audience.

  • Teen Talk: Students will be able to able speak and understand the foreign language.
  • Examples in the classroom.
    • tudents will speak with correct pronunciation and intonation patterns.
    • Students will take what is said and paraphrase it.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will volunteer as translators for a local elementary school.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Border Patrol Officer, Customs Agent, International Diplomat, International Business Executive.
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • ESL, Spanish, French, Latin, and German.

3. Students read and derive meaning from a variety of materials written in a foreign language.

  • Teen Talk: Students will read books and other material written in a language other then English.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will read and analyze reading material.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will translate a children's book for use in the classroom with non- English- speaking students.
    • Students will go to an elementary school and read to non-English-speaking students in their first language.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Translator
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • Spanish, French, German, and Latin.

4. Students write in a foreign language for a variety of purposes and for a diverse audience.

  • Teen Talk: Students will be able to write in a foreign language when needed.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will use specialized vocabulary and advanced grammatical structure.
    • Students will express ideas and opinions on topics.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will write a letter to their particular foreign language embassy
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Translator
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • Spanish, Latin, German, and French.

5. Students acquire and use knowledge of cultures while developing foreign language skills.

  • Teen Talk: Students will be aware of the different cultures that surround their foreign language.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will analyze aspects of the cultures being studied.
    • Students will research a topic of interest using sources from the cultures being used.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will coordinate a day set aside in school for a particular culture.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Translator
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • Ethnic Studies, Spanish, French, Latin, and German.
