Music Content Standards

1. Students sing or play on instruments a varied repertoire of music, alone or with others.

  • Teen Talk: Students will be able to perform different types of music with a group or by yourself.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will play solos or duets with other students.
    • Students will sing solos or duets with other students.
    • Students will rehearse given music with an entire group.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will play or sing a solo at a retirement home.
    • Students will perform at a church concert,
    • Students will perform for other community events.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Professional musician, Symphony conductor, Music teacher
  • Classroom Exploration:
    • Band, Orchestra, Choir, Music theory

2. Students will read and notate music.

  • Teen Talk: Students will read music and are able mark it with symbols that aid in your understanding.
  • Examples in the classroom:
    • Students will number their music for rehearsal purposes.
    • Students will mark the accidentals (sharps, flats, etc..) for rehearsal purposes. $ Students will understand dynamics and other musical symbolism.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will teach fellow students what the symbols on the music mean.
    • Students will prepare music for performance at community events.

3. Students will create music.

  • Teen Talk: Students will write their own music using notes, rests, etc.
  • Examples in the Classroom:
    • Students will write a solo for performance.
    • Students will write a duet for performance.
    • Students will write music for the entire ensemble to perform.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will write music to be performed at a community event.
    • Students will write music to be taught to younger students.

4. Students will listen to, analyze, evaluate, and describe music.

  • Teen Talk: Students will hear and judge music according to accepted beliefs. Examples in the Classroom:
    • Students will listen to cassettes, compact discs or other sources of music.
    • Students will listen to music and determining its worth.
    • Students will judge one other on their music performance.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will go to a concert and write a critique of the music.
    • Students will judge a student recital.
    • Students will write to a music studio explaining why they like or do not like the studio's music.
  • Careers for Exploration:
    • Professional musician, Symphony conductor, Music teacher, Music producer, Recording engineer

5. Students will explore various cultures through the study of music and music history.

  • Teen Talk: Students will be exposed to all types of music. It will cross all lines of race, culture, and religion.
  • Examples in the Classroom:
    • Students will read about the music of other cultures.
    • Students will listen to the music of other cultures.
    • Students will compare and contrast the music of other cultures.
    • Students will read about the history or origins of other culture's music.
  • Service Learning Activities:
    • Students will teach elementary students about the music of various cultures.
    • Students will create music similar to that of other cultures.
